Zbrush Anatomy Sculpts Pt1

Over the past few days, I have been feeling that itch to study one of my favourite subjects anatomy! Especially the head and face with all its many morphologies and nuanced details. However I have always had trouble with certain areas of the face such the as the brow and the shape of the skull something about these areas always confused and frustrated me resulting in me getting stuck or hung up on these areas with that constant feeling of something was wrong, something just did not look right. So to better remedy this I have decided to dive back into studying anatomy and this time making use of some 3D tools and references to better aid in improving my knowledge in these areas. The best reference you can get for anatomy is a real body however unless you are willing to fork out some cash for a live model or seek out a local group this can be a problem, luckily there are a few tools available to help if you willing to spend a bit of money. My first stop is the online Store of Ten24

http://www.3dscanstore.com/

These files do come with .obj files that can be opened in any 3D application but they tend to have a lot of Zbrush specific files so you will need Zbrush to make the best use of these 3Dscans but it is not required, if you want to go down the free route I would recommend grabbing a copy of Blender a free 3d modelling and animation tool similar to 3Dsmax.

It's also possible to view the files in the unreal editor and make use of all the tools unreal 4 has to offer.

If however, you're looking for something a little bit more self-contained then Ten 24 has you covered with their relatively recent Anatomy 360. This is a 3D viewer and light studio with pre-installed models in various poses. Due to its realistic rendering style, Its like having a real-life model in front of you with the added bonus of having almost complete control of the lighting and colour scheme, it even comes with pre-made lighting solutions such as Sci-Fi, monochromatic and even a clay material and lighting setup.

As you can see Anatomy 360 is a very useful tool for the general study of light, form and anatomy especially if you want to see the human form in a particular lighting scenario. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that is interested in anatomy for study or inspiration in general.

Here are a few of my Zbrush practice sculpts I have been working on while utalizing these tools.

Next Time ill be going over another source of reference I use quite often and an extremely useful tool for displaying lots of reference images all at once allowing for easy viewing of hundreds of images.
